Sales Management

One of the Great Plains Media markets is looking for a General Sales Manager to oversee a 7 person sales team. This could be a great opportunity for an LSM looking for a move OR an Account Executive looking for that management opportunity.Send email introduction to brucewelker@gpmnow.com and I'll get back to you with more information.Thank youSee More

I've been encouraged by a couple of owners....in Iowa and Wisconsin....through our Idea Bank Association, to buy a station, and I decided to stay where I am as Sales Manager for now. I think I'd live a little longer with less headaches. Our staff is made up of 12 or so part time/on air here and there people. I've had several full time sales people who have come and gone...that door is always swinging....one stayed and did well for three years. Daddy's money persuaded her to quit. We're made up of a bunch of characters and lots of testosterone. But when all the dollars come together, we do pretty well. Hired a 25 year old graduate of Univ. of Alabama ...broadcasted their sports worked at the campus station. He is our sports director/news director....polished and sharp, but not a sales person unfortunately. Each person here sells in some capacity. Makes it interesting. Not the environment I came from 7 years ago. Took some adjustment. K

Well, I went to Cookeville's website and looks like you're in a fairly small market, so we might have some things to share.

I've been in radio for 25 years and here for almost seven. It's amazing what a stand alone AM can generate when you're the only station in the biggest and fastest growing country in N. C. I do not sell AM radio so much as just.....radio. My biggest challenge is 12 characters at a grassroots, cornball, kind of red neck station who have done things the same way for many years......until I walked in the door. However, it's that local sound that makes us successful. I go back to the basics.....but they were not even there. We've done well and I've hung in there. We've famous for our Swap Shop, Bluegrass, live and local sound. Having a hard time getting much respect from the business community and chamber......we're 5,000 watts with an application to double coverage within about a year. 85% of our business is on contract, sponsoring programs.
I came from two FM's and an AM in Sumter, S. C. where my family is located and was affiliated with the International Idea Bank there as we are here. They have been a great souce of information for the owner Archie Morgan and I go to most of the conventions.

I hope this site is helpful and that lots of people will get active on it. With all the e-mails to check, facebook, etc. it's just one more thing, but could be a good thing. Thanks for responding........Kathie
