Jeff Dostal replied to Jane Moore's discussion 'How do you make a sale when the client tells you their budget is "shot"?'
Jane, great question. I was doing a station sales training this morning on this very topic. In all of my years of radio sales I realized that few if any clients actually had a budget. At least not one they stuck to. I tell sales people to be having…

Jeff Dostal replied to Karen Carroll's discussion 'Network Presentations'
Karen, I'm very familiar with BNI groups and they are about the person more than the product. They are networking opportunities and people do business with people they trust and respect. I think it's critical to offer some of the "why…

The best radio book I've read for radio sales people and their clients is "David Can Still Beat Goliath...Radio Advertising Is David's Slingshot". I know it's available on Amazon.

Jeff Dostal replied to Rod Schwartz's discussion 'RSC MOURNS THE LOSS OF BOB DOLL AT AGE 77'
I've known Bob Doll for just over four years but have been in awe of the impact he's had on me and others in that short amount of time. As a start up company, wanting to help small market radio stations, Bob saw in us something special and…

All you need to tell them is it will bring more people to their facility. All the people you have partaking in the event will be there, their family and frineds will be there, sponsors will be there, etc. Sure the mall would get people on its own,…

How would you open the conversation?

There is such a wealth of talent on this site that I wanted to take advantage of it and get your input. The question is not regarding radio sales but rather approaching a business for an event. I do the workout called P90X. You may have seen the infomercials. I have a group of friends who do it as well. It's growing like wildfire around the country. We want to capitalize on that and hold a P90X - a -thon at the local mall. We want to pick a charity and raise money by doing several hours of the…See More

Joel A. Swanson replied to Jeff Dostal's discussion 'Who does the cleint belong to, the sales person or the station?'
We have a great relationship with most of the agencies we deal with; but we still call on the clients "face-to-face" as well. It is surprising how seldom the agency bothers to even ASK the local store managers anything; or tell them what…

To those belieiving that the the client belongs to the station. Have your station go messing around with clients on an agency’s list and see how fast it takes to lose the accounts. There are cases when an agency buys around the station and…

I'll have to add it probably depends on the size of the market... having worked in a small market radio area for some thirty years I can assure you that I've seen a mass exodus of clientele with a couple of reps I've known. All…

Mark A. Waddington replied to Jeff Dostal's discussion 'Who does the cleint belong to, the sales person or the station?'
I have read all the posts, and am surprised at how many people think the sales person has at least partial ownership in the client list. This is not a complicated question. The client list belongs to the station. Even if a salesperson has prospected…

Bill Cook replied to Jeff Dostal's discussion 'Who does the cleint belong to, the sales person or the station?'
A client or list of accounts is the property of the station. The sales rep, account exec, account manager, brand specialist (I know, none of us could figure that one out either) is an agent of the station who represents the station to the…

Jeff Dostal replied to Susan Wells's discussion 'Furniture store'
Susan, You have a line from your client in your message: "And he says he likes to have flexability to run when he has something to talk about." WOW! I would hope as a business, especially one wanting to create value would have something to…

Jeff Dostal replied to Rebecca Schwartz's discussion 'Friday Poll: Best Advertising/Selling Books You've Read'

Alan Rock replied to Jeff Dostal's discussion 'Who does the cleint belong to, the sales person or the station?'
As long as you represent the station, that client is the station's. If you leave the station, does that client leave too? If your station is working for the client (getting results), then I would suggest that the client belongs to the station.…

Hi Jeff...
Thanks for the note...no storms right now but we have learned that things could change at any time with virtually no notice...after all these years they are not fun at all to deal with.
