Rod, I agree with you 100%. I have read this book, re-read it and then read it again. As the sales manager at my radio station I encourage all of my reps to read it as well. It's a great resource and Paul really knows what his is talking about!

HI Rod, No we do not, but I can think of few ways more effective toward growing grassroots listeners. Scoot the pro's aside momentarily, and feature local high school, middle, and elementary school kids doing age-appropriate announcing. If…

Independent Radio Station, circa 1951

Thanks to Arcane Radio Trivia blogger Jose Fritz for sharing this 18-minute video short on the operation of an independent radio station, in this case, WMCA in NY.Created in 1951 by the US Army (who knows why?) it's a nostalgic piece. Today we have production directors and music libraries, not composers and studio orchestras. But some things have endured...more or less.  For instance, this at about the 8-minute…See More

What's really neat about this video is that, while it consists primarily of images and music, it's the WORDS at the very end that make all the difference! Thanks for sharing, Simon!  Powerful piece.

The National Lentil Festival Puts Pullman, WA in the Limelight

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 2:00pm 0 Comments

Every city in America has something to celebrate.  Here in Pullman, WA, it's lentils.

Lens culinaris. Latin for "edible lens" (or "tasty lens" perhaps?). It's a member of the legume or pulse family (beans, peas, garbanzos), prized for its flavor and health benefits. And it just…

Radio (Still) Gets Results - an Audio Presentation

The fact that I retrieved this presentation from a cassette tape tells you something about how long ago I put it together. (Hint: it was before we recorded onto flash memory cards, before we emailed MP3's, even before we burned…

Radio-Mercury Musings

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 2:00pm 0 Comments

Each year since 2004 I've retained copies of my best radio work from the previous year, with a view toward entering them in radio's premiere creative competition, The Radio-Mercury Awards.

Most of my advertising clients have annual contracts that call for being on the air every day. This degree of exposure usually requires regular changes of copy, to maintain a healthy balance between repetition and freshness.

But I have one client, a mom-and-pop…

Thanks Rod.  Me too!   I have been in radio for about 8 years and spent 3 years with the Nielsen TV Ratings.  Prior, I owned my own corporation, Industrial Rental Equipment, in South Alabama.  Radio is my passion!  I look forward to conversing with everyone and sharing ideas and experiences.  Thanks for the welcome!  Have a great day!
