Les Patterson’s Monday Morning Boost: Life sucks… Sometimes

  • A friend recently shared how she was inspired to see the ups and down of life like chapters in a book. While the current chapter we are reading may be full of challenges, surely that won’t stop us from continuing to read the book and find out what happens in the next chapter.

Her inspiration may have come from Brian Falkner:

Life is like a book. There are good chapters, and there are bad chapters. But when you get to a bad chapter, you don’t stop reading the book! If you do… then you never get to find out what happens next!

    Or maybe Elizabeth Duivenvoorde:

If life was a book; every day would be a new page, every month would be a new chapter, and every year would be a new series.

Or perhaps one of hundreds who have ventured forth a similar opinion on the matter.

There is no lack of inspirational quotes with which life has been compared to. Hit Google and start typing, “Life is like…” and see what you get. Here are a few, conveniently assembled under – you guessed it – “life is like quotes.”

    • “Life is like a beautiful melody, only the lyrics are messed up.” - Hans Christian Andersen
    • “Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don’t turn out – take another shot.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like a mountain, hard to climb, but once you get to the top the view is beautiful.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like a piano. What you get depends on how you play it.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like photography. Focus is an ingredient to have a good shot.” -Unknown
    • “Life is like an ocean. It can be calm and still or rough and rigid. But in the end it’s always beautiful.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like a bar of soap, once you think you’ve got a hold of it, it slips away.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like a canvas. It begins blank and every day is like another brush stroke.” - Unknown
    • ‘Life is like a 1,000 page book. You want to quit halfway through, but then you realize you have a lot left to look forward to.” - Unknown
    • “Life is like a party. You invite a lot of people; some go, some join you, some laugh with you, some didn’t come. But in the end, after the fun, there would be a few who would clean up the mess with you. And most of the time, those were the uninvited ones.” - Unknown

If I may be so bold as to venture forth into an already overcrowded field of encouraging fodder, I offer the following quotable inspiration.

    Life sucks…

I sense the wheels are already in motion to tweet me on Twitter and create a meme for Pinterest (neither of which I’ve ever used), and lobbying to get me quoted on Goodreads.

    Yeah, right.

We can’t boil the complexities of life down to a concise two word phrase. This is also true if that phrase were, “Life’s great!” or “Life’s awesome!”

The reality is life is all the above.

At times we feel great, full of optimism, light, hope and encouragement. Then there are the times we may feel overwhelmed, hopeless, discouraged, and surrounded by darkness. Most of the time I would guess we simply feel life is normal. That is to say, a life filled with ups and downs is a normal life.

Back to our original premise, we can see why “Life is like a book” is not a bad comparison. Each chapter in a book, just as the expanded thought of each book in a series, offers different scenarios, various perspectives, and interesting and challenging twists and turns. So we keep reading “to find out what happens next!”

If I may be so bold again, I offer another perspective to the “Life is like a book” comparison.

Write your own story. If you don’t like the way life is going; change it. Pick up a pen and write down the goals and action steps that will guide your next chapter in life. Recognize your weaknesses while focusing and building on your strengths. Set aside your own feelings of inadequacies and ignore the pessimistic attitudes of naysayers. Your life is your own; write your own story.

While the thoughts are not original, as few thoughts are, the assemblage is mine. Quote me if you wish. Goodreads, here I come!

Have a great Monday! Thanks for letting me share.
