My company Radio Ideas Bank has just sent out a free idea to our subscribers and registered users. I didn't want members of RSC to feel left out, so I'm posting it here too.

You're very welcome to sell it to one of your clients - and we'd love to know how you get on.

There are hundreds of other clever, creative ideas for contests and promotions at www.radioideasbank.com.

You can search by occasion, business category – or just browse and get inspiration for something you can sell to a client.

So... here’s your free idea from our database!

    THE HAPPINESS INDEX

Based on the concept of the financial indexes, the Happiness Index is an imaginative way of reflecting the mood of your radio station's area every day.

Simply add the Happiness Index to one of your regular features such as a weather forecast or traffic report. Only do it once a day, for example at 7.50am on your morning show.

At the end of the forecast or report, simply say, "... and the Happiness Index for xxx city today is 67, which is 3 up from yesterday."

Start the feature at 50 and arbitrarily raise or lower the index on a daily basis reflecting the mood of the area. For example, if a local sports team wins a match, the Happiness Index goes up a few notches. If there's bad weather, the Index goes down.

Do it in a matter-of-fact way and NEVER explain what the Happiness Index is or what affects it. Just let it stand. Listeners will gradually become intrigued by the way it works and listen out for it every day!

This is a daily fun feature for your morning show which is simple to execute and ideal to get sponsored by any retailer but particularly by a bank or finance company.

    Thanks Paul,

This is a great idea...I like it. In fact radio as a medium is very local and the example cited by you "if a local team wins a match"...lends itself to numerous themes. On 23 May 2012, ...I posted "Pappu Pass Ho Gaya (Pappu has passed the exam)" on my blog http://www.himanshuagarwal.com, and as a corollary to Happiness Index, the mood in Bangalore (Karnataka, India) on 23/05, probably was anticipatory and upon declaration of the results could have been happy or gloomy.

The fuel prices are up by 10% on 24/05 and it is a talking point in India...even the contests on radio are wearing the theme of fuel price increase.

I assume the index be announced twice a day...at the start and then towards late evening...similar to opening and closing indices.

    Thanks Himanshu...

With my knowledge of the Indian radio market, I think this is an idea which would work very well there!
