Hi all! I read about the 3/50 project in the latest TazMedia newsletter; it looks like a great opportunity for local businesses and radio to work together for the benefit of the community. The official website is here. Are any of you participating in this project?

Just went to the 3/50 site and in their Resource Library there a lots of nice items that can be downloaded or ordered to show support for the project, window clings, counter toppers, envelope inserts, etc., but no PSA type radio spot! That surprises me. We would air one if available.

Yes. We put a banner ad on our home page. I would love to have any other ideas for saving our historic downtown. We are losing our businesses one by one.

    Hi Rebecca,

I also read about the 3/50 project in the latest TazMedia newsletter and we are running commercials now..We've been running shop local commercials and thought this would freshen the message up a little. . Just thought it was a great way to increase business for local businesses. We are getting lots of positive feedback from businesses in the community. I am working on a plan to generate revenue on this by asking local businesses to be listed as a local business and include schedules with sponsorship.. Here is the commercial we wrote for the 3/50 project...

F: HONEY, I’M OFF TO SAVE THE LOCAL ECONOMY.
M: YOU CAN’T JUST SAY YOU’RE SHOPPING, CAN YOU?
F: BUT I’M NOT JUST SHOPPING. I’M REALLY GOING TO HELP SAVE THE
    LOCAL ECONOMY.
M: OKAY, I’LL BITE...HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THAT?
    F: 3 STORES AT A TIME.
    M: I HAD TO ASK.
    F: IT’S CALLED THE 3-50 PROJECT.
    M: IT’S A PROJECT?
F: JUST THINK ABOUT 3 INDEPENDENTLY-OWNED STORES YOU’D MISS IF
    THEY WERE GONE.
    M: OKAY.
F: NOW CONSIDER THIS: IF JUST HALF THE EMPLOYED U-S POPULATION
SPENT $50 A MONTH IN THOSE STORES, IT’D GENERATE OVER 42-
BILLION DOLLARS! AND FOR $100 SPENT, 68 RETURN TO THE COMMUNI-
TY THROUGH TAXES, PAYROLL, AND OTHER EXPENDITURES. ONLY 43
COME BACK FROM NATIONAL CHAINS, AND ZERO FROM THE INTERNET.
M: HANG ON, I’M GOING WITH YOU!
A: IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON TO START A TREND...HOW ‘BOUT YOU?
PICK 3, SPEND 50, SAVE YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY. THIS MESSAGE BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE MONADNOCK RADIO GROUP SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS AND OUR COMMUNITY…

    F: female/M: male...lighthearted, upbeat conversation
    A: upbeat anncr

Of those of you participating with the 3/50 project. Do you owe the 3/50 project anything if you put together a sales package that your station makes money on?

I'm not participating in the 3/50 project per se, just have visited their website, but I did find this in the FAQ section of the site, and thought it might answer your question: My company would like to roll out a promotion using The 3/50 Project name. May we do that? If 100% of the resulting proceeds go to independent businesses as defined here, yes! If any portion of the resulting proceeds go to a person or company that doesn’t fit the definition of independent or if your promotion will charge independents for goods or services, we’re talking about licensing (including tv and radio affiliates, vendors, chains, franchises, etc.). Use of our brand, content, and/or items provided on the Resources page that extends beyond the purposes specified there must be approved in advance, in writing. In a nutshell, The 3/50 Project was created to build revenue for independent brick and mortars, not large companies or national brands. Hope that helps! (Oh, and the complete list of frequently asked questions is available HERE.) ~ Rebecca
