Do's and Don'ts of Advertising Alcohol

    Good Afternoon Sales Associates,

The radio station I work for is looking to sponsor a wine festival in the near future, that I have the potential to head.  I'm trying to look into what should be included should we have any wineries that would like to advertise, as well as advertising our own event.  Has anyone come across any websites, newsletters, discussions, etc. that would have rules and regulations for the state of Pennsylvania?  I'm not sure if it varies from state to state.  Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!

Meghan, have you checked with your state liquor control board?

Backing up Rod's reply (important, since the Commonwealth of PA controls the sale of wine and liquor--state stores, et. al)--you might also network with the local tourism promotion organization in your county.  Also, what kind of relationship does your station have with local elected state officials?  Perhaps it's a good time for the boss to do some networking. If there are tourism promotion dollars available, perhaps some could go your way for advertising/promotion of this.

One caveat:  since PA has state stores, and if you make a proposal, it would likely be reviewed by bureaucrats in either or both the Commonwealth's Liquor Control Board and tourism promotion agencies, make sure you have all the i's dotted and t's crossed when it comes to crowd control (21 or over partaking of samples), and like any good sales presentation you have frequency and reach numbers in a form that they can understand.

    Good luck and salud!
