Friday Poll: How Has Your Station Helped Your Community?

    Happy Friday, everyone!

The inspiration behind this week's poll question came from a recent Radio Ink article by Eric Rhoads, Using Radio For A Higher Purpose, in which he describes how Fargo, ND, radio station WDAY 970 AM worked with a wounded veteran to create a weekly radio show that addresses veterans' issues and helps support the nonprofit organization "Homes for Our Troops."

Radio stations are known for working in their local communities to promote and support worthy causes, and to raise funds for individuals or areas in distress.

    So we'd like to know:

In what community projects or fundraisers has your station participated? How has it made a positive impact in your area?

Looking forward to reading your replies!

For a few decades WOWO radio has raised thousands each year right before Christmas during an event called Penny Pitch.  A couple years ago a local businessman decided to DOUBLE the grand total during our two day Radio-thon.  The total $ give away at our last event was over $340,000 divided between 2 local charities. https://www.wowo.com/wowo-brigadoon-fitness-penny-pitch-check-presentation-tonight/

WHEO has participated for may years in an on-air fundraiser to benifit Relay for Life here in our county. We line up local musicians to play live music throughout the day and organize a volunteer phone bank. WHEO is a tiny little community station in a very rural part of Southwest VA, but in one year we were able to raise over $18,000 to donate to the cause.

It's always a lot of fun and folks look forward to the local entertainment.
