The title above says "marketing" because advertising is just one part of that category. The definition I was given many years ago (by Chris Lytle, perhaps?) is: "Marketing is everything you do to promote your business." By extension, that would embrace everything from the quality of the food and service to the choice of tableware and music in the background.
I have the pleasure of doing some advertising and marketing consulting for a family-owned-and-operated
high-end restaurant here, and it's been encouraging to see them prosper, especially in the difficult economy we've had this past year. They do a great job on every front - quality food, attractive presentation, uncompromising attention to their customers.
Broadly speaking, the Restaurant category in our country has suffered along with others that depend upon (diminishing) discretionary dollars. Back in October, writer and aspiring restaurateur Bruce Buschel published a terrific piece entitled,
"100 Things a Restaurant Staffer Should Not Do." While some of the items are specific to the restaurant business, most have wider application to other businesses and industries, ours included.
So, because it contains some good, ahem, food for thought...I thought our members might enjoy the article.
