    Holly,

This isn't a copy idea, but it might be worth mentioning. Wineries and micro-breweries are finding it profitable to join forces with upscale or "foodie" type restaurants to do wine/beer pairings, i.e., multi-course meals in which a different wine or beer is matched to each course. My wife and I have been to a few of these over the past couple of years and they can be quite an adventure. (For example, last week we attended our first beer/food pairing at a fairly new local restaurant. Dessert consisted of a trio of truffles -- one Espresso, two with bacon and sea salt -- a thick slice of bacon drenched in chocolate, and a stout beer/ice cream float!)

An event like this gives the winery a chance to show off its current offerings in a relaxed, cordial atmosphere, and it creates a lot of buzz in the community. I suppose if you could find a way to put your station's name on it, too -- all the better for everyone. Let me know if you'd like more details.

I'll upload a few spots I've done over the years for one of our local wineries. Perhaps you'll hear something that spawns a useful idea; the Wine 101 could work for any winery. I have more, if you're interested.

    Best,

    Rod

If it's not something your winery is already doing, you may want to jump in and facilitate some new partnerships.

I should add a word of explanation about the Ewe Eye White...

Camas Prairie Winery (formerly Camas Winery) is located in Moscow, ID -- home of the University of Idaho (UI). Proprietor and winemaker Stu Scott wanted to create a souvenir wine that would be attractive to students, staff, alumni, and friends of the university, both to serve and to give as gifts, especially for Christmas, graduation, etc.

His original idea was to have a UI label, but that was quickly shot down by university officials, who would not allow anything that might appear as an endorsement of Stu's wines. So instead, the resourceful Stu hired a graphic artist to design a label depicting a big-eyed female sheep in a quasi-Mona Lisa pose and smile, and called this new wine Ewe Eye White. (Obviously, there's only one way "Ewe Eye" can be pronounced correctly, making radio the perfect medium to promote the new wine.)

Now you know why the wine has become an "institution."

    Cute, eh?

    Holly,
Try these techniques: Go to the winery's tasting room - and - listen. Listen to what the winery personel are saying their about wine and wine in general. Listen to what the tasters are saying about the wine and wine in general. Look at the winery's website for the language of wine that they use. Learn about the grapes or fruit they are using for each variety of wine and if you have the time, bring a recorder or use and upscale IPod or whatever to record the winemaker describing the wines..record comments of tasters...then edit and write copy around those comment. It's not steak, but sell the sizzle...or the experience... of their wines. And remember the philosophy of one our NH wineries..."Wine should be enjoyed, not studied". Inexperienced or casual wine drinkers can be scared off by a wine snob approach. Going to a local winery should be fun.
