Can a radio salesperson call on political candidates, parties, etc or do we have to wait to be contacted by them? I'm in Maine
Ken, I posted this on the RSC Facebook page, and here's what two of our fans had to say:
From Matthew Coleman:
I call on them. Their spending is like any other advertiser: those who present & ask are the ones who get. Not to mention, we've got quite an uphill battle against tv for share. AND, depending on if your station takes local races, some local candidates don't even know how to get started. Most counties have a listing of candidates & contact info on their board of elections websites.
From Mark Walker:
Call, email, tweet- YOU make the contact, and don't wait for them. Even better- if you can tell them their opponent is buying or producing- or already on air in the market!
I was taught by an old radio broadcaster that FCC law required you to give equal opportunity to each candidate. I.E.. if you call of one, you are required to call on each person running for that office or nomination if it is a primary. That may be old information but I always go by that and it is to our advantage!
I have sent out letters congratulating them on their candidacy and included rates.
