Much Needed College Radio/TV Sales Advice

    Hello Everyone,

I haven't posted on the site much, but I definitely need some advice on how to make a sale to my first possible clients.

Just to let everyone know, I am currently the business manager for both the television and radio station on my campus. Both stations are completely student-run. As an important side note, this is the first time the stations have attempted to approach businesses to gain advertising time.

Being completely new to this, I've sought out advice from professors and others, but it seems that no one is quite sure how to approach it. I've already contacted several businesses (face to face) and have exchanged contact information with them. What they currently want is to exchange rates and station information through email.

This leads me to my main problem. While I have already created a rates card, I'm not quite sure how to word an email to the potential clients. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks for your time!

p.s. If anyone wants to check out the rates card and give critiques on it, please send me a message to my inbox.

    Hey Jared!

I think just like if you were selling commercial radio/TV you need to start out by getting an appointment with each prospect to do some fact finding. When a business owner sends, "send over some pricing information by email"... that's usually just a put off to get rid of you. Tell your prospects that you would like to sit down and discuss how you can collaborate next year and set up a time when you can sit down and find out how you can be of help.

No one's going to buy spots (long term) just because you're the local college station or because it's extremely affordable.

What's your station's format? What demographic do you target? Do residents in the area listen or is the listenership predominantly students?
