We have interns from local high schools and a couple of colleges who help with board op work and also who help with promotions and some sales work.
However, recently we have been approached by 2-3 people who want to come out and volunteer. I'm a little leary of this because I don't want to let someone in who might have access to privy information or someone who might be a "mole" for either another radio station or perhaps even someone who might report something to the FCC or another agency.
Thoughts?
It is my understanding that there are laws that anyone who works for you MUST be paid minimum wage, including some interns. If you are a not for profit, you may have volunteers. Otherwise, they must be paid. To be a true Intern, there must an educational program set up where they actually learn. I-Heart media (Clear Channel) have been sued by numerous iterns who were just used as employees and never paid a wage. There were no educational programs set up for a true learning environment.
